Every cafe in the suburbs tells you it is a work spot. The tell is whether the cafe means it or just looks the part.
A work spot needs four things. Outlets near the seats. Wifi that holds a video call. No two-hour table limit. Coffee worth a second cup. Most cafes give you two of four. The ones that give you all four are worth knowing by name.
We wrote this list because we opened a coffee shop. We are biased. We are also honest. Some of what is on this list is not us, and some of it is not even close. That is the point.
The ones that actually work
Communion Neighborhood Cooperative. Coworking membership model. If you are working full days, this is designed for you. Coffee is fine. Space is the pitch.
Civil Pour Coffee + Beer. Enough outlets. Honest wifi. The beer side means the room stays lively past five, which either helps or does not depending on the kind of work. Good for light lift, bad for calls.
7th Day Coffee. Brick Row location has a clean layout, real tables, and no posted time limit we have seen. Gets loud on Saturdays.
Moon Wolf Provisions. The hangout room is built for this. Records on a working turntable for when you want a soundtrack that is not a Spotify playlist. Outlets at the long table. Free wifi. The rule is the one we hold ourselves to: order a second cup by hour two or trade the seat to the person eyeing it from the counter. That is how a shop stays a shop.
The ones that look like work spots but are not
La La Land. Pretty. Busy. The tables are built for food. Brunch crowd does not leave room for a laptop, and the staff — fairly — would rather seat another paying party than watch you nurse a latte until three.
Chocolate Drip Cafe. Excellent for a treat. Not a work room. The counter-service flow and the lighting are wrong for it. Go for the dessert, not the hour.
Shops we have not tried enough to rank
Urban Mocca, Crescent Coffee House, Muse Cafe, Elevated Coffee & Tea. All have devoted regulars. We will update this post as we spend more hours in each.
The working rules
Order a second drink if you are past the first hour. Tip on the second drink like you did on the first. Bring headphones. Do not take calls on speaker. If the room fills up, step outside or pack up — someone else has the same deadline. These are not rules we make. They are the rules that keep a shop being a place where people can work.
We are at 920 Custer Road. Tuesday through Saturday seven to three, Sunday eight to two. The hangout is open even when the kitchen is not.
