The University of Texas at Dallas is a forty-thousand student campus with three Starbucks within the loop and not a lot else on-campus. The good coffee is off-campus, north and south of the loop, all within a five-minute drive.
Here is a short list of the shops close enough to make the run between classes.
Eiland Coffee Roasters at Canyon Creek
Roaster flagship. The beans we pour at Moon Wolf are pulled here. Clay Eiland is Q Grader certified and does not buy below an 86 on a hundred-point scale. If you want to go back to the source, this is it. Expect quiet mornings and a tight menu — the coffee is the point.
Moon Wolf Provisions
The closest independent coffee shop to UTD that is not a chain. Five minutes from campus. Specialty espresso from Eiland and Liaise Coffees. A hangout room built for reading, writing, or the thirty minutes between sections. Tuesday through Saturday seven to three, Sunday eight to two. Closed Monday. 920 Custer Road.
Muse Cafe
South of campus. Tea-forward. Fewer outlets than the shops on this list. Good for a short stop, less good for a full session.
7th Day Coffee
Brick Row. Ten minutes east. Further than the others but a real room with real tables. Worth the drive if you are staying a while.
Civil Pour Coffee + Beer
North of campus on Coit. Doubles as a beer room in the evening — a useful detail for the grad student wrapping a paper at five. Specialty coffee during the day, draft list at night.
What is on-campus
Starbucks in three buildings. Vending coffee in every hallway. A few food-service carts with drip. None of it is specialty, and none of it pretends to be. When you want something honest, the five-minute drive is not a tax. It is the point.
Getting to Moon Wolf from UTD
North on Waterview, left on Campbell, right on Custer. Five minutes without traffic. Free parking in front. We are at 920 Custer Road, Richardson, TX. Bring a book. Bring a study group. Bring a laptop and stay for the second cup.
